Equity performer Melody A. Betts and I conceived Bessie Smith's last performance before her death. We researched and wrote the text between songs over a two month period. We were drawn by the tension between the vulnerability that made her a star and the tough no nonsense reputation she earned, Melody was backed by a three piece band and covered 12 songs rendered by Ms. Smith.
